Jo Ann is a Licensed Professional Counselor and National Certified Counselor with over 25 years experience in the field. She has worked at Cedar Ridge as a therapist since 2006. Her extensive background includes working as a therapist at public and private mental health clinics, working with youth at the Woodbourne Center, working with employment assistant programs and family programs, besides serving as mental health case manager, and a bereavement coordinator at a local hospice.
Her extensive and multifaceted experience also includes having worked at the University of Maryland and VA Medical Center doing mood disorder research with veterans and the public for five years. As such, she served as a study coordinator on various mood disorder research studies in which she conducted diagnostic interviews and administered clinical assessment measurements of mood disorders and neuropsychological disorders in addition to conducting computerized screenings on major depression in a primary care setting. She also programmed an implanted device to stimulate the vagus nerve in national research study into a novel treatment approach for intransient depression now approved by NIH. She won a grant for her innovative research for her masters thesis on widowhood from the Maryland Association for Counseling and Development. Her broad experience working in the mental health field has helped her see counseling as a transforming process of healing and growth for both the client and therapist with each learning from each other.
Jo Ann works with adolescents and adults with the following issues but not limited to: Depression/Mood Disorders such as Bi-Polar Depression; Loss and Grief; Anxiety Disorders; Stress Management and Adjustment Disorders; Anger Management; Marriage and Relationship Counseling. Depending on client's needs, she uses various approaches such as cognitive behavioral, solution focused, supportive, relaxation training and more.
She earned her MA Clinical Psychology from Loyola College(now University); Internship from Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, MD; MS Guidance and Counseling from Loyola College; BS Biology Cum Laude from Roanoke College.
